Senden is a messaging platform for communities: servers with text, voice and announcement channels, direct messages, and small group chats of up to 10 people. It is deliberately minimal, so you get the essentials without the clutter other platforms pile on.

Senden is free to use due to its low operating cost. An average user costs about €0.007 per month. We do all the heavy processing on your client. This lets us save on server costs. Instead of using your data to make money, Senden is funded by donations.

Any DM or group chat can be encrypted with AES-256-GCM. The key is generated on your device and never reaches our servers, so we only ever store ciphertext. You share and back up that key yourself, and if you lose it those messages are gone for good.

Senden stores data in Switzerland exclusively. Our proxies in Germany only ever see encrypted traffic and store nothing, so no unencrypted data leaves Switzerland. Voice servers currently run in Switzerland only.

No, senden does not sell your data to any entity.

Uploaded media is checked for CSAM and other illegal imagery on our own infrastructure in Switzerland, never through a third-party scanning service. Every message, profile and server has a report button, and no single moderator can ban a user or close a report alone.

Requests have to arrive through the Swiss Dienst ÜPF, and foreign agencies additionally through mutual legal assistance. Valid requests we comply with in full. End-to-end encrypted messages can only be handed over as ciphertext, and data we never collected cannot be produced at all.

6'000 characters per message, up to 10 attachments, 50 MB per file, 500 pins per chat, 50 GIF collections, voice up to 320 kbps, video at 720p and 30 fps, and screen sharing up to 1440p at 60 fps. Senden runs on donations and has no paid tier, so donating raises no limit. If you have a genuine need that can't be solved another way, we can raise a limit for your account.

Some parts of senden are open source, and our self-hosted server backends will be too. You can view their source code at any time. Voice currently runs on LiveKit, an established open source project, and work on our own voice relay will resume once we have more people for it. Components like the backend and web frontend will stay proprietary. The reason for this is that we do not want to create another matrix-like application, but rather a stable product.

Senden (previously unsend) started as a prototype in 2023 and was rebuilt from scratch in 2025. It runs on infrastructure operated by wireway.ch, whose projects, including Streamshare, Piped and repiped, have served more than 2.2 million users over two years without a privacy compromise or data breach.

You do. Feature decisions run through a community vote modelled on Swiss direct democracy: any user can propose a feature, everyone votes on it, and when the team disagrees it has to put up a counter proposal for the community to vote on instead of quietly rejecting the idea.

Yes! The iOS and Android apps are in development, and native apps for Windows, Linux and macOS already exist. Until the mobile apps ship, the web client works in every mobile browser.

Only where a feature can't work otherwise. If you turn on push notifications, they are delivered encrypted through your platform's push service: Google, Mozilla or Apple. For our GIFs feature, we use gifli.pictures, a wireway.ch owned GIF platform. Everything else stays on senden.
